Almost
more than 23 radio stations in Kampala, Uganda have recently been closed down
by authorities on the charge that they were or are “promoting
witchcraft’’ and scamming. These stations had their licenses suspended. It is
alleged that these stations aired programs over the national territory with
guests who claimed medicine and powers to cure diseases like HIV, Cancer and other such diseases and malaises which people commonly
suffer from nowadays.
Pamela
Ankunda, the Uganda Communications Commission spokesperson revealed that: “The
radios have been promoting witchcraft.” She also added that: “People claimed on
these radios to cure diseases like AIDS and cancer . These people have been
fraudulently getting money from the public. Their operations and licenses have
been suspended until they are able to assure the commission through writing
that they will abide by the minimum broadcasting standards,’’ In the words of
Mrs. Ankunda, the Ugandan journalistic community will not tolerate such
outrageous proclamations without due verifiable research research result. Failing
to provide such findings, the individuals and the stations on which they make
these declarations will face the laws of the country.

It
was made clear by Pamela Ankunda that Uganda has well over 292 radio stations,
mostly private-owned and as a result, it
was not uncommon for various religious leaders, self-proclaimed prophets and
traditional healers to care freely buy air time on these stations and make
claims such as being able to cure HIV and other incurable diseases through the platforms
of these channels.
